Site Collection Navigation Settings

[ 0 ] April 29, 2010 |

Another of the many new SharePoint 2010 features ( I wonder how many times I have said that) is the ‘Site Collection Navigation’ settings that are located within the Site Collection Administration as seen below:

So what do these settings actually do? Turns out there are some interesting scenarios but some weirdness as well:

Navigation Enabled: If you turn this off then all of the top level navigation AND site navigation is disabled. When would you use this? Well if you have created your own control or you want to create navigation a different waywould use this in a wiki site to make people link to pages manually. You do still get the breadcrumb however which is good and a could be a good way to set up a wiki

Security Trimming: If this is turned off then users will see sites that they don’t have access to but won’t be able to access them. You could use this when users need to know about sites but not have access to them, for example a whole bunch of sites that maybe the user should know about but not necessarily have access to.

Audience Targeting: Much like the descriptions states, you can hide navigation links depending on audience now as well.
