SharePoint 2010 Site Search Drop Down Mode
Some of you might have seen a new option when going into the Search Settings page under Site Collection Features and that is the Site Search Dropdown Mode.
What do all these things actually do? Well lets take a look!
Do not show scopes dropdown, and default to contextual scope
If you are the top level of the site collection you will get a ‘All Sites’ returned, otherwise you will get results returned at the contextual scope (Site or List)
Do not show scopes dropdown, and default to target results page
In this case you go to the target results page which if you have a scope defined on the results then it will use that setting, otherwise you will get All Sites returned regardless of where you are in the site collection.
Show scopes dropdown
Displays the scopes defined in the scope display group in the scopes drop-down list.
Show, and default to ’s’ URL parameter
Displays the scopes defined in the scope display group in the scopes drop-down list. Also, adds the scope to the page URL using the ‘s’ parameter.
Show and default to contextual scope
Displays the scope drop-down list and automatically selects the “This site” or “This list” scope.
Show, do not include contextual scopes
Does not display the “This site” and “This list” contextual scopes in the drop-down list of available scopes. So unless you have other scopes defined all you will get is
Show, do not include contextual scope, and default to ’s’ URL parameter
See above with the addition that the s paramter will be appended to the search query URL
Hopefully this makes some more sense and you use these options appropriately!

Hardest part was finding the option!
You have to be logged in as administrator and then go to site collection settings.
Hey Michal,
I actually think that even if you’re at the root of the site collection and have it set to “Do not show scopes dropdown, and default to contextual scope” it still only shows the current site. No?
